  • A Spot of Bother (Paperback)
Author: Mark Haddon
Php 160
Fun Fact
Haddon’s first novel is the whimsically-titled The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, which you should read too if you get the chance.
Booker Says:
Booker Aris: If you’ve read The Curious Incident…, this novel would be right up your alley. Haddon strikes the right balance of humor and melancholy in this simple tale of mortality, family, and love told through a dysfunctional family in the midst of wedding preparations.
Booker Grace: It gave me teh sads. :(
Verdict: 3.5 Penicillin capsules

  • Then We Came To The End (Paperback)
Author: Joshua Ferris
Php 161
Fun Fact:
In his debut novel, Ferris writes the narration in the first-person plural.
Booker Says
Booker Aris: If you’ve been feeling down and out re your job/career, this book provides a bit of schadenfreude that can be the balm to ease your troubles. It could also possibly convince you that the crappy job you’ve been holding for x number of years is not worth it, which I guess would leave you in even deeper shit I wouldn’t even dare get into here. Good luck. :D
Booker Grace: It’s like The Office set in a really messed up reality show. After reading this, you’ll wonder who among your colleagues is dealing with the most hardcore shit, and if anyone will turn psycho any minute now. Timely and alarmingly accurate, this novel is a must read for every white-collar employee.
Verdict: 4 Penicillin capsules

  • Fleshmarket Alley (Paperback)
Author: Ian Rankin
Php 142
Booker Says
Booker Aris: You can’t do better than Rankin when it comes to crime fiction (in my opinion). As with all Rebus novels, the narrative is firing on all levels; the plot labyrinthine but easily navigable, probably due to the laid-back writing style he employs. You wanna solve the mystery, but before you know it, you’ve been enjoying the tangents and sideshows along the way.

  • The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
Author: Junot Diaz
Php 205
Bookers Says:
Booker Aris: Nerdcore galore. If you are/were that kid who prefer(s/red) to be left alone with your comic books/video games/scifi & fantasy novels/etc., then this is the book for you. Yeah, now it is cool to be geeky/dorky/nerdy but this book harkens back to the day when the stuff above could get the shit kicked out of you. With the violent and grisly Trujillo dictatorship and an exodus to America as backdrops for the confusions that adolescence brings (i.e. hormones + girls), I can just picture you nodding and smiling to yourself, thinking, ‘So that wasn’t just me?’
